Supporting More Women for Local Election in Carlow

Women for Election is delighted to be partnering with Carlow County Council to bring a programme of comprehensive and engaging training and events to Carlow to encourage and support more women to get involved in politics.

Carlow ranks as one of the lowest county in Ireland for female representation at Local Government level, with just one female Councillor out of 19. In the 2019 Local Elections, only 5 women ran out of a total of 31 candidates across Carlow.

We want to change this

It’s time for Women from Carlow to count themselves in and take their seat at the table.

We know that women are leading community groups and in leadership roles across the community, and now is the time to see that converted into the Council Chamber at a representative level. In the next Local Elections in 2024, just how amazing would it be to see that 50% of the candidates that are running are women? To have a Council Chamber that truly reflects the diversity of the County?

The Supporting More Women in Carlow programme

Supporting More Women for Local Election in Carlow is a comprehensive training and awareness programme that will aim to engage, encourage and inspire women in all their diversity from across the county to consider getting involved in politics.

We have something for everybody in this programme, and the whole community has a role to play in getting more women involved in politics in Carlow. Whether it’s encouraging a woman to consider running, supporting a woman to run, or running yourself, these programmes have been designed by Women for Election to support that journey, and are delivered by trainers with decades of experience in Irish politics and leadership.

If you are just starting to think about politics, or are a sitting Councillor looking to rerun, these programmes will help you along the way.

7th Nov 10am-1pm Finding your why & perfecting your message – Carlow Council Chamber

This module looks at how to frame and talk about the reasons why you want to run for election; how to talk about yourself and your experiences and skills; what you want to achieve; and how to be effective in connecting with and communicating with voters.

14th Nov 10am-1pm Women Belong – Carlow Council Chamber

Women Belong provides women with encouragement, support and tools to take the next step and run for election. In a safe and encouraging space, hear how to push past the fear and doubts you may have about getting involved in politics, as you share concerns, get expert advice, and the tools to take that next step towards your political career.
