The Opportunity in the General Election

There is a phenomenal 246 women running in the General Election – a 52% increase on the number of women who ran in the 2020 General Election.

Ireland is currently 104th in the world in the number of women in national parliaments, with the outgoing Dáil having 37 women TDs out of 160 – just 23% – less than a quarter.

Voters will have the chance in this election in every constituency to return more talented, capable women to the Dáil than ever before.

Most Political Parties have reached the 40% women and 40% men candidate quotas that applies to this General Election.

Where the quotas are not reached a Party will lose 50% of any State funding.

Women in each Constituency

GE2020 was the first election that had women candidates in every Consituency. This election has at least two women candidates in every Constituency.

15 of the 43 Constituencies have no women TDs in the outgoing Dáil.

With more seats in the next Dáil (174) and women candidates running in every Constituency, voters have the opportunity to ensure that every Constituency has one or more women TDs for the very first time.

Women and Men in each Constituency

There are more women than men candidates in five constituencies, equal numbers in two and men outnumber women in 35 constituencies.

But with the number of women candidates ranging from 11 in Meath East to 2 in Dublin North West, all voters have the opportunity to vote for some of the talented, capable women running in the General Election. Politics works best with a balance of men and women involved.

36 women TDs were elected in General Election 2020. One additional woman was elected in a by-election in 2021. The total of 37 women in the Dáil – 23% – places Ireland 104th in the world in the number of women in national parliaments.

Women in Government

Just 4 women – 26% – in the Cabinet

There are currently four women ministers in the 15-member Government – the Cabinet. There have never been more than four women in the Cabinet. The first woman was Constance Markievicz in 1919. It took 60 years to get the second women – Máire Geoghegan Quinn in 1979 as Minister for the Gaeltacht.

Women for Election have called on all parties to commit to a minimum of 40% women and 40% men in Cabinet after the upcoming General Election.

General Elections 1992 to 2020

Women Candidates and Women Elected

After decades of stagnation in the number of women in the Dáil, candidate gender quotas of 30% women and 30% men were introduced in 2012, for the 2016 General Election. There was an immediate rise in the number of women candidates and of women elected. The candidate quotas go to 40% for the upcoming General Election.
