Women for Election is delighted to be collaborating with Offaly County Council to design and deliver the More women and diversity in Offaly programme.
Offaly is the county with the lowest representation of women in Local Government with just one female County Councillor out of nineteen, or 5%. In the last local elections, only 2 women ran out of a total of 12 candidates in the locality of Tullamore, 2 out of 10 candidates in Edenderry were women, and just 4 out of 14 in Birr.
In total that’s 8 women out of a total of 36 candidates.
With this programme, we’re hoping to change all this.
We know women are leading communities across Offaly, and our mission is to see that reflected in those who put themselves forward to run for election. In the 2024 Local Elections we hope to see at least 50% women on the ticket in Offaly. Women from minority groups have also been traditionally excluded from the political system, and this also must change if we are to see a true and balanced and reflective representation of Irish society from our politicians.
The Supporting More Women in Offaly programme will run over the next few months and we want to reach as many people as possible.
