Since 2012 Women for Election has trained more than 1,000 women to run for election. The past year we have worked with women, through our training, from across Ireland as they prepare to run for various elections.
The local elections are only a few weeks away, on 24th May, so we want to offer some more support to women running and the people who are helping female candidates. This support is the Women for Election Local Election Toolkit.
We will deliver the toolkit through 5 emails. Each email covers a topic relevant to running. On its way are tips on canvassing, social media, engaging with media and taking care of yourself amid the campaign rush. We will be sending you those emails over the coming weeks.
Each email includes lessons from our courses, tips from experts and links to resources which should help with your campaign. Arriving in your inbox in the coming days is tips on canvassing and making people aware of your candidacy.
Before we leave you, here’s an interesting and encouraging story. Last June we had Green Party Dublin City Councillor Claire Byrne (South East Inner City)┬áspeak at our INSPIRE training session in Dublin. Byrne took course participants through her election journey and noted how short a lead in time she had with campaigning. Her presentation was called “Couch to Council in Six Weeks”. Reader, she won that seat.
So, think of this as your Emails to Election guide. We won’t be able to cover everything and at the end of the course, we’ll give you a chance to give us valuable feedback.

It's appalling that the gains we're making for women in politics are being undermined & threatened by online abuse. Progress has been slow enough - more needs to be done to stop online platforms being used to undermine women politicians and democracy https://t.co/9i9XrR0fUr

This is a worrying editorial approach to women in public life. The satire would have worked just as well without the heels and skirts, the point would still have been clear. Male politicians wouldn't have been portrayed in quite the same way.
