Women for Election wishes to extend a warm welcome to our new Chairperson, Alison Cowzer. Alison succeeds Michelle O’Donnell-Keating, one of our co-founders.

Alison is a longtime supporter of Women for Election. In her role as Chairperson she will liaise with our CEO Ciairín de Buis in promoting the #MoreWomen mission and guiding the organisation.

Ciairín says: “As a longstanding board member of Women for Election and the co-founder of East Coast Bakehouse, Alison brings decades of business and marketing experience to our organisation. We look forward to continuing to work alongside her in encouraging more women to run for election in Ireland.”

Ciairín also extends a thank you to our former Chairperson and Women for Election’s co-founder Michelle O’Donnell-Keating: “Michelle has helped build an amazing organisation which is actively changing the fabric of Irish society. Thanks to her work with Women for Election, Irish politics is on the path towards eventual gender parity. I’m delighted to help continue her work and build on Women for Election’s accomplishments.”

There are now 35 women TDs in Dáil Eireann, a historic high. In the 2016 General Election, 40% of the newly elected women TDs had been through our training programmes. 50% of the 194 women who won seats in the 2014 local elections were also trained on our programmes. As Ireland prepares for next year’s local elections, we are pleased to announce we are taking bookings for upcoming training programmes in Cork and Dublin. Places on the course cost €199, excluding booking fee. Courses previously cost €350 and the significant discount is possible thanks to our successful crowdfunding campaign last year.

Incredible to see Finland's government being led by five women. Given that the number of women in the Dáil just dropped to 21% we have a lot of catching up to do in Irish politics. Let's hope we see #morewomen in Dáil Eireann after #GE2020
