On Wednesday morning a group of us were lucky enough to join a training session with  Pat Montague when he took us through the Irish political system, how it works (and doesn’t) and how it all fits together. As always, Pat delivered an informative and practical session covering the foundations of our political system. We hope the 50 or so of you who were able to join found it useful and inspiring – we’d love to see some of you running for election some time in the future. Hopefully yesterday gave plenty of food for thought.

Like everyone across Ireland, we have adapted our plans so as to fit in to our new normal. Some of our upcoming (virtual) training and events are below. Please do have a look through, and if there is something that interests you, sign up and join us! Yesterdays session came about through a suggestion from a member of the WfE community. If there is something else you would like to see us cover, please do get in touch with Claire (claire@womenforelection.ie).

We have all been affected in different ways by the current pandemic, this is why we have made the decision to provide most of our online training and events free of charge. It’s our way of helping us stay together, while we are apart. But, Women for Election, like most organisations have taken a huge hit financially since Covid-19 came into our lives. If you can help us out at all, we’d be delighted –  you can make a donation here.

I am sure you’re keeping a close eye on the political news as government formation talks are taking place, I certainly am! Women for Election are calling on our next government to make a commitment to gender equality in Irish Politics. If the government wants to see #MoreWomen elected, this is what they need to do.

Like everyone, we’re looking forward to when our current restrictions can be (safely) lifted – and will relish the chance to sit down together. In the meantime, we will keep working to bring us together, while we’re staying apart. Our next step in that is when our good friend Dearbhail McDonald will be in conversation with Samantha Power. Samantha was kind enough to join us in person when she launched her book, Education of an Idealist, in Ireland last year. This year she is joining us online. I know I am really looking forward to hearing from her again – places are limited, so if you’d like to join us next Thursday, 21st of May at 6pm do please here.

Let’s all stay the course!

I'd like to see the results of a sim survey on female councillors. Highlights how a national Women's Councillors Caucus could be valuable @aoifegracemoore @women4election @NWCI https://twitter.com/aoifegracemoore/status/1308660360392695808

A survey of female senators is considerably worse from TDs. 13 have been sexually harassed, 14 subject to sexist insults in politics and 16 have been trolled: "My dream job in the Dáil dealing with leering men, afraid of getting into lifts with people." https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-40053194.html

There's still time to sign up for this.

Senator @ivanabacik will be speaking to journalist @Jennifer_Bray about her political journey as well as current Irish political issues.
